Polaroid of the Week: Vibrant Notting Hill, London
When my friend Shannon shared she'd be in London in September, I knew I had to carve out a week in my former adopted home. Having just spent time with her niece two months prior—but not seeing Shannon in over a year—I was overdue for a return. After years of global travels, I'd only passed through briefly last November, nearly five years post-farewell to England. I'd already promised myself more time in this beloved city; now I had the perfect excuse. A week felt too short, yet it allowed me to revisit favorite spots, reconnect with friends, observe the city's evolution, and enjoy an unconventional afternoon tea.
The initial days brought relentless rain and chill, forcing me into the warm layers packed for my upcoming Iceland trip—a stark reminder of why I'd once grown weary of London. But as the sun emerged the final days, the city sparkled anew, reigniting thoughts of perhaps relocating here someday.
Our adventures included wandering Camden markets and Regent's Canal to Primrose Hill for skyline views (the Shard has transformed it!), strolling Southbank from the London Eye to Millennium Bridge to check Tate Modern updates, and exploring neighborhoods like Mayfair, Marylebone, Notting Hill, and Shoreditch. Notting Hill stood out: marveling at Portobello Road Market's quirky charm evoked memories of my Saturdays sourcing fresh produce from its stalls when I lived nearby.
Departing, I again felt time was insufficient. London's transformed immensely in five years—a week barely scratched the surface of its new gems. I resolve to return properly, and soon.
