Polaroid of the Week: Kayaking Adventures in Colombia's Amazon Rainforest
When planning my Colombia itinerary, the Amazon wasn't on the list. But travel's magic often unfolds through chance encounters—fellow explorers sharing tales of hidden gems that captivate your imagination. That's how Jardin entered my plans for next week, and Colombia's Amazonas region became a recent highlight after an unforgettable trip.
Reaching this remote paradise requires a flight from Bogotá to Leticia, Colombia's largest Amazon town (population ~35,000), straddling the borders with Brazil and Peru for seamless cross-border exploration. While Leticia is unremarkable, its surrounding rainforest and the mighty Amazon River with its tributaries steal the show. The natural splendor is breathtaking—I was mesmerized by the vast emerald canopy unfolding below as our plane descended.
From Leticia, a 50-mile (75km) boat ride up the Amazon led to Puerto Nariño, where we swam in the river and ventured to Lake Tarapoto. This expansive jungle lake teems with pink and gray river dolphins, a true wildlife spectacle.
Back in Leticia, a kayaking excursion through mangrove forests was a personal favorite. We paddled amid towering trees, spotted playful squirrel monkeys, and arrived at serene Lake Yahuarcaca—ours alone. The profound tranquility, enveloped by water and jungle symphony, was pure bliss.
Despite a hospital visit marking the end, my Amazon week remains etched in memory as an extraordinary adventure in nature's heart.
