Polaroid of the Week: Buffalo's Gardens in Full Bloom – A Surprising City Escape
Fresh from a refreshing week in Buffalo, New York, I've returned to the hustle of New York City. This getaway was a perfect break from the Big Apple's rush, especially as I squeeze in experiences before my upcoming move next month.
Buffalo exceeded all expectations with its groundbreaking architecture, world-class art collections, historic landmarks, eclectic neighborhoods, and delectable cuisine. Stay tuned for a full recap, but here's a teaser: I explored five Frank Lloyd Wright homes—plus his mausoleum—admired masterpieces by Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Warhol, Monet, and Van Gogh; biked 30 kilometers through diverse districts; visited Niagara Falls; toured the serene Forest Lawn Cemetery; cruised past abandoned grain elevators; marveled at Art Deco and Victorian gems; savored local microbrews; and swapped famous Buffalo wings for equally tasty eggplant wings.
My visit coincided with the annual Garden Walk Festival, where 380 residents open their private gardens to the public. Armed with a map, visitors embark on a self-guided tour, peeking into homes and discovering artistic, exotic, traditional Japanese, and rose gardens. Garden owners proudly shared tips, offered lemonade, and chatted about blooms—delighting this flower enthusiast and warming my heart.
How did you spend your week?
