Polaroid of the Week: Recharging Amid Germany's Renewable Energy Leadership
After two months exploring New York, my companion and I needed serious downtime. We're now re-energizing in Germany, a global leader in renewable energy.
While skeptics might view sprawling fields of wind turbines and solar panels as eyesores, we see them as symbols of optimism and forward-thinking innovation rare in our worldwide travels.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, once a nuclear energy advocate, pivoted to renewables after Japan's 2011 Fukushima disaster. By 2013, renewables exceeded 25% of Germany's energy mix. The Energiewende aims for 80% by 2050.
This transition brings challenges like higher household electricity bills, but polls consistently show Germans prioritize energy independence. First-generation turbines are being replaced by fewer, more powerful second-generation ones—taller than redwoods and wildlife-friendly. Today, we passed hundreds of new ones along highways.
