Polaroid of the Week: A Heartwarming Christmas Baking Frenzy in Germany
I've finally taken a well-deserved vacation—sort of. While I didn't stop working entirely, I significantly reduced my screen time during the Christmas holidays, prioritizing quality moments with family and friends. Despite a twinge of guilt, these days have filled my heart with love and joy.
Before returning to Germany for the holidays, I debated whether flying back from Asia was worth it, especially with another trip planned soon. But spending Christmas surrounded by loved ones was the perfect choice after a challenging year.
I hadn't celebrated Christmas in Germany for seven years and never felt homesick—until last year. With my nephew born just ten days before Christmas, and my family gathering without me, the longing hit hard. I vowed to be home this year, no matter what.
Upon arrival, I was enveloped in Christmas magic: festive music, decorations, the aroma of sugar-roasted almonds, and spiced mulled wine. Strolling through Christmas markets, savoring treats, and sipping hot eggnog brought back cherished memories. I commandeered my sister's kitchen, baking 15 sheets of assorted Christmas cookies to make up for lost time.
Though I adore tropical winters, I'll prioritize family Christmases more often. The sparkle in my nieces' eyes as Santa arrived and they unwrapped gifts, plus the laughter with my siblings, filled me with pure joy.
I've also reflected on the past year and will share insights in my monthly roundup on Wednesday.
