Polaroid of the Week: Immersing in Oktoberfest's Joy in Munich, Germany
After returning to Germany, I headed straight to Munich's Oktoberfest—my first in five years and seventh overall. As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to introduce a friend from New York to Bavarian beer culture: massive steins of robust wheat beer paired perfectly with pretzels. We joined one of my closest high school friends at her reserved table with her girlfriends. Securing a reservation is like winning the lottery, so we embraced the tradition in style—Lederhosen for men and dirndl dresses for women, ubiquitous during the festival.
Far more than just beer tents, Oktoberfest is the world's largest funfair, featuring thrilling rides and food stalls. It draws over 6 million visitors in 16 days, with about 1 liter of beer per person—6 million liters total! I spent two days there: one exploring the 42-hectare grounds, soaking in the electric atmosphere and rides, and another inside a massive tent holding up to 10,000, singing and dancing to oompah bands. It was an unforgettable highlight of my travels this year! Next week: more photos, including that wild roller coaster, plus essential visitor tips.
