Polaroid of the Week: Embracing a Snowy Winter Wonderland in Germany

Polaroid of the Week: Embracing a Snowy Winter Wonderland in GermanyThis week, I discovered I could thrive for 48 hours without checking email—a vital lesson after being overly connected to social media, email, and the internet. To start the New Year right, I embraced a mini digital detox, breaking free from my iPhone attachment (remarkable, since just 12 months ago, I managed without a phone for nearly four years!).

Snow proved more enchanting than I remembered during Germany's first winter flurries. Though running on it wasn't ideal, building a snowman and tossing snowballs with my nieces brought back childhood joy. A peaceful walk around a frozen lake amid a white wonderland ranked among my favorite recent days, capped by warming mulled wine.

Now wrapping up family time, I'm packing for Helsinki and Stockholm next week—borrowing winter gear for -15°C (5°F). First, a few days in Berlin reconnecting with friends before Scandinavia. I'm thrilled to revisit this welcoming city and explore Finland and Sweden. With a Scandinavia week ahead, I've planned my Hong Kong and Philippines trips later this month. The Philippines, long on my wishlist, inspires me from posts like this one or this one.

Recharged from holiday downtime and fewer emails, I'm eager to travel again—despite loving family reunions and catching up with old friends after Sri Lanka's hectic pace. Guilt-free breaks like this are priceless.

My next Polaroid hails from Finland. Share your tips for Stockholm, Helsinki, Hong Kong, or the Philippines in the comments!

  • Polaroid of the Week: Rediscovering Picturesque Erfurt, Germany

Although visitors often fall in love with Erfurt, my hometown in Germany, I wasnt always a fan. The city boasts a magnificent cathedral, numerous historic churches and medieval buildings, and the renowned Krämerbrücke—a unique bridge in northern Europe covered with inhabited half-timbered houses (one of only three such bridges worldwide). Growing up there made these wonders feel ordinary. With a population of around 200,000, its not tiny, but I craved a grittier vibe beyond its picture-perfect f

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind—Ive traveled to Leipzig and Frankfurt, and Im now en route to Berlin as I write this. Suddenly, everything changed! I can finally share the real reason for my Germany trip: an invitation to my final interview at the U.S. General Consulate in Frankfurt for permanent residency. This rigorous nine-month process is complete, and I couldnt discuss it publicly until now. Ive hinted at it here, and Snapchat followers (mariposa2711) watched the journey unfold du

  • Polaroid of the Week: Immersing in Oktoberfest s Joy in Munich, Germany

After returning to Germany, I headed straight to Munichs Oktoberfest—my first in five years and seventh overall. As a dedicated fan, I was thrilled to introduce a friend from New York to Bavarian beer culture: massive steins of robust wheat beer paired perfectly with pretzels. We joined one of my closest high school friends at her reserved table with her girlfriends. Securing a reservation is like winning the lottery, so we embraced the tradition in style—Lederhosen for men and dirndl dresses fo
