Polaroid of the Week: Rediscovering Picturesque Erfurt, Germany
Although visitors often fall in love with Erfurt, my hometown in Germany, I wasn't always a fan. The city boasts a magnificent cathedral, numerous historic churches and medieval buildings, and the renowned Krämerbrücke—a unique bridge in northern Europe covered with inhabited half-timbered houses (one of only three such bridges worldwide). Growing up there made these wonders feel ordinary. With a population of around 200,000, it's not tiny, but I craved a grittier vibe beyond its picture-perfect facade, so I never envisioned living here long-term.
After time in Berlin and a Malta escape, I returned to visit family and friends before leaving Germany. A recent out-of-town guest inspired 'backyard touristing,' letting me see Erfurt anew through fresh eyes. Sunny spring weather enhanced its charm, making me wish for more time to explore before departing. I still wouldn't choose to live here, but I'd proudly guide you around anytime.
