Polaroid of the Week: Capturing Joy on Argentina's Salinas Grandes Salt Flats
We rented a car for a few days to explore the wonders of northern Argentina. This region stands worlds apart from the bustling capital Buenos Aires, featuring indigenous villages, vibrant mountain ranges with hues of red, green, and even blue blending like an artist's palette, and the highlight: the stunning Salinas Grandes salt flats. Though smaller than Bolivia's massive Salar de Uyuni just a few hundred kilometers north, these expansive white plains spanning 525 km² proved mesmerizing. Formed from an ancient lake, the salt crust reaches up to 50 cm (1.64 feet) thick at 3,350 meters (nearly 11,000 feet) above sea level. The striking contrast of bright blue skies against the gleaming white salt was truly breathtaking. We lingered for playful photos but pressed on northward through the magnificent Quebrada de Humahuaca range, anticipating even grander sights ahead.
