Polaroid of the Week: Arbol de Piedra – The Iconic Stone Tree in Bolivia's Siloli Desert
One highlight of our South America journey was the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia. After traveling north through Chile to San Pedro de Atacama, we joined a three-day off-road jeep tour to Uyuni.
We anticipated vast white salt flats stretching endlessly, which we explored on the tour's final day.
However, the salt flats occupied just half a day. The preceding two days revealed some of the world's most stunning landscapes: red, green, and white lagoons; volcanoes; striking rock formations; hot springs; geothermal geysers; and vibrant rainbow-hued mountains.
At Arbol de Piedra (Stone Tree) in the Siloli Desert, we were mesmerized. This rock protrudes from the sand dunes, sculpted into a tree-like form by relentless 120 km/h winds and sand across the 4,000m-high Bolivian Altiplano during colder months. Like the Grand Canyon's erosive forces, wind, sand, and time create natural wonders.
More photos and stories from our Uyuni tour are coming. After 3.5 years of global travel, Bolivia's southwest region truly impressed us.
