Polaroid of the Week: Vibrant Cartagena, Colombia
I've finally arrived in Colombia after years of anticipation. Back in 2010, my journey began in the U.S., heading south through Mexico and Central America toward Tierra del Fuego. The plan included a scenic catamaran from Panama to Colombia via the stunning San Blas Islands—but after nine months in Latin America, we opted for Europe instead.
Returning to South America years later, we focused on Argentina and Chile's summer, flying into Buenos Aires and reaching no farther north than Peru. Now, nearly five years after that first attempt, I'm here in Colombia. Despite a bumpy start (more in my monthly roundup), I'm settling back into the vibrant Latino rhythm.
My introduction was Cartagena, a coastal gem in northern Colombia renowned for its well-preserved walled historic center—one of Spain's earliest settlements. I was captivated by the 16th-century plazas, cobblestone streets, ornate wooden balconies, and vividly colored buildings, snapping hundreds of photos.
The shift from New York's 32°F (0°C) to Cartagena's 90°F (32°C) Caribbean heat was intense. After exploring the city, we headed to pristine beaches 4-5 hours east. Next up: tanning, Tayrona National Park, and a cool retreat in the mountain village of Minca.
I'll return to Cartagena for more adventures, including the famous Totumo mud volcano. Share your Colombia tips in the comments—I've visited many spots, but your insights are welcome!
