Polaroid of the Week: Discovering Vibrant Copenhagen on a Budget Day Trip
While many might view detouring to another country for a cheaper flight as inconvenient, I seized the opportunity. A $200 savings on my Europe-to-LA flight from Copenhagen, plus just €20 from Berlin via budget transport, made it an easy choice. Europe's competitive airlines, buses, and trains have made such adventures affordable and exciting.
My must-sees were straightforward: the iconic Little Mermaid statue, the vividly painted Nordic houses lining the canals, and Christiania, the city's renowned autonomous district celebrated for its alternative culture. (Photography is prohibited inside Christiania, so check out this picture-heavy BuzzFeed article for a glimpse inside.)
I wandered freely, ducking into intriguing streets, lingering in stylish coffee shops, and relaxing by the water to people-watch in Denmark's capital. Bikes outnumbered cars—much like in Stockholm—highlighting the locals' love for cycling. Early spring brought chilly air but sunny vibes, with patrons enjoying outdoor cafés. Copenhagen proved the ideal one-day escape; I suspect our paths will cross again.
