Polaroid of the Week: Vibrant Dyed Chicks Brighten Christmas in Copán, Honduras

Discover these eye-catching dyed chicks! Typically an Easter tradition in the Middle East and Asia, we spotted baskets brimming with multicolored chicks in Copán, Honduras, as part of Christmas celebrations.
Excited children of all ages gather around, snapping up pairs for just 5 Lempiras (about US$0.26 each). While the practice brings joy to kids, it raises ethical concerns. Local farmers insist the dyes injected into the eggs are non-toxic and harmless, but scientists warn otherwise. Fortunately, the bright blues, pinks, greens, and yellows fade after a few weeks as new feathers grow.
Wishing you a Feliz Navidad from Honduras!
