Polaroid of the Week: San Pedro de Atacama – Chile's Charming Desert Oasis

Polaroid of the Week: San Pedro de Atacama – Chile s Charming Desert OasisAs our bus wound through the Andes from Argentina into northern Chile, we crossed vast expanses of pristine wilderness—rolling hills, shimmering lakes, grazing llamas, and endless dunes. It seemed impossible for a town to exist amid such isolation. Yet, suddenly, houses dotted the horizon, leading us to Chile's immigration checkpoint and the captivating town of San Pedro de Atacama.

This quaint settlement perches on the edge of the world's driest and highest desert, serving as the ideal base for adventurers exploring its marvels: steaming geysers, volcanic lagoons and hot springs, salt flats alive with pink flamingos, intricate salt caves, towering sand dunes, surreal rock formations, and otherworldly landscapes. The Atacama Desert delivers Chile's most stunning vistas, elevated by San Pedro's own allure—a stylish, relaxed haven with exceptional dining.

Fueled almost entirely by tourism, its dusty streets brim with welcoming restaurants, cozy guesthouses, and expert tour agencies. The central plaza features a striking white church with a creaky wooden floor. Delectable cuisine, effortless vibe, and breathtaking scenery earned San Pedro de Atacama a spot in our Top Five Favorite Destinations of the past year. We can't wait to return en route to Bolivia this year.

  • Polaroid of the Week: Salò, the Picturesque Lakeside Gem on Lake Garda

Last week, selecting one photo from 1,500 shots in Iceland was tough. This week, choosing from a similar volume taken during my Italian adventures proved equally challenging. After a day exploring Sirmiones Roman ruins at Grotte di Catullo, Salò unfolded before us like the quintessential Italian lakeside retreat.
