San Pedro de Atacama: Immersing in the Timeless Spirit of Chile's Atacama Desert
At first glance, San Pedro de Atacama evokes the rugged charm of an old Western film set in the American Southwest. Its single-story Spanish colonial adobe buildings, splashed with mud from the deep red dusty roads, blend seamlessly with the landscape. Venture outside town, and you might spot cowboys on horseback or herders tending sheep and goats, their hooves echoing on the unpaved paths.
At an elevation of 7,900 feet (2,400 meters), combined with scorching days and freezing nights, even short walks can be demanding. Like hikes in the Tucson heat, we often paused to catch our breath or sip water in this arid desert environment.
Yet, San Pedro stands uniquely apart from anywhere else—even other Chilean locales. This small desert village masterfully balances serene remoteness with its role as the adventure hub of the Atacama Desert.
Home to just 5,000 residents, the town offers ample diversions for a day or two, but it's the surrounding Atacama Desert that draws global travelers.
We've shared the desert's otherworldly landscapes before and will soon detail must-see spots in San Pedro. Here are highlights that make it exceptional:
- The third-largest geyser field in the world (El Tatio Geysers)
- The third-largest salt flats globally (Salar de Atacama)
- Lunar-like terrains of Moon Valley and Death Valley
- Deep blue altiplano lagoons, including Laguna Miscanti, Miñiques, and Chaxa
- Laguna Cejar, salty enough to float effortlessly like the Dead Sea
- Ancient rock carvings of two faces (Pukará de Quitor)
- World-class stargazing: Milky Way, Saturn, and more
A week here barely scratches the surface, but tours involve long drives, early starts, extreme temperatures, high altitude, and intense scenery. Plan rest days in charming San Pedro—our favorite spot in all of Chile.
The main street, Caracoles, brims with restaurants and tour agencies. Though touristy, the quaint colonial architecture creates a picturesque vibe. We'll never forget our first candlelit dinner in an adobe restaurant, with live guitar adding intimacy and romance.

Food in San Pedro de Atacama
Given its remote location in one of the world's driest regions, we anticipated basic fare. Instead, San Pedro surprised us as a culinary haven. Menus overflow with tempting dishes, including inventive vegetarian options like savory vegetable crepes, quinoa risotto with local greens, salads with baked brie and cranberries, or quinoa tabbouleh.
Every spot offered vegetarian choices, and a dedicated vegetarian/vegan restaurant exists in this tiny town. Gastronomic exploration alone warrants extra days—rarer in Chile.
Beyond the food, the ambiance shines: rustic adobe interiors with rock-built bars, evening fires for warmth.
Days see visitors on tours or at hotels, but nights awaken Caracoles with diners perusing menus. Lunch sets include starter, main, dessert or coffee; dinners feature nightly specials.
Despite remoteness and adventure focus, it's no backpacker haven. Splurge on upscale dining for memorable experiences.

What to Do in San Pedro (Besides Eat)
San Pedro exudes a relaxed, sleepy pace. Step off Caracoles to the shaded, tree-lined Plaza de Armas for coffee and people-watching—stray dogs sunbathing included.
The northwestern corner holds Iglesia San Pedro, Chile's second-oldest church (1640). Its white façade contrasts the endless blue sky, but inside impresses: cactus wood walls, roof, and door bound by llama leather—no nails.
Dominating the eastern horizon is 19,409-foot (5,916-meter) Licancábur volcano, snow-capped in winter. Use it for orientation.
A short walk reveals mud-brick homes with clay-hay roofs. Though tourism dominates, traditional Atacameño farming and herding persist—llamas, goats, sheep, and cowboys on dusty roads.
Roads are watered daily despite just 1.4 inches (35 mm) annual rain, raising questions amid booming tourism.

Rapid growth brings new resorts, but we hope San Pedro retains its Wild West allure.
