Palm Springs Drag Scene: Iconic Performers and Must-See Shows

Drag performers are a cornerstone of Greater Palm Springs culture, as iconic as palm trees, Tiki bars, Mid-Century Modern architecture, and lush golf courses. From elegant to extravagant, these captivating entertainers represent the vibrant, unapologetic spirit of our desert valley.

Bella’s Ball

Palm Springs Drag Scene: Iconic Performers and Must-See Shows

Monday nights at the trendy Ace Hotel, the statuesque Bella da Ball hosts energetic Bingo games in the stylish King’s Highway Restaurant. Guests from around the world pack the booths and tables to test their luck. Bella, channeling a high-energy retro hostess, mingles with the crowd, awarding personalized prizes to winners. This is followed by trivia in the adjacent Amigo Room bar. Loyal fans even sport “Bella’s Babes” shirts.

A longtime Palm Springs fixture, Bella da Ball is renowned for her performances at local venues and her dedicated charity work, including fundraisers for Desert AIDS Project. She holds a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame and is celebrated as a social ambassador and key figure in the drag community. Bella participates in major events like the Festival of Lights Parade, Palm Springs Pride, Modernism Week, and film festivals.

Her weekly schedule includes a free Cabaret Variety Revue every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Georgie’s Alibi Azul in downtown Palm Springs, featuring her signature Bellatini cocktail. On Thursdays, she emcees the Lipstick Show at Copa, showcasing drag artists alongside vocalists like Marina Mac, Sassy Ross, and Jersey Shore.

Gypsy at Oscar’s

Elsewhere in town, glittering performances abound. Oscar’s Café & Bar presents the nationally toured Carnival Cabaret Thursday through Saturday nights, paired with a three-course dinner. Impersonations range from Marilyn Monroe to Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. Emcee James “Gypsy” Haake, an 83-year-old comedian and actor from the original La Cage Aux Folles in Beverly Hills, holds the Guinness World Record as the “oldest working female impersonator.”

Sunday evenings bring Michael Holmes as Judy Garland in an after-dinner extravaganza at The Purple Room Restaurant & Stage. The show mixes music, comedy, and nostalgia with Judy’s “friends” like Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Carol Channing, and Mae West.

On East Arenas Road, a historic gay nightlife hub, Hunter’s hosts Flamboyance Sundays at 9:30 p.m., led by Jayla D. Fox with rotating stars like Nebuer Styles, Bootz Dreya, Simone Miller, and Mystic BeFierce Miller.

At Toucans Tiki Lounge north of downtown, Tommi Rose headlines Sunday shows at 8 and 10 p.m. (first Sunday features Mayday with Mayhem Miller). Thursdays host The Playhouse drag competition, and the 1st and 3rd Mondays bring Latin Drag at 10 p.m.

It had to pee you“In the middle of my first night in a hostel in Amsterdam, I heard a loud, gushing sound,” Jamie Zipfel tells Reader’s Digest. “I chalked it up to faulty pipes until I smelled it: one of the drunken guests had peed all over the floor.
