That's the Spirit of Kentucky: Ultimate Bourbon Distillery Road Trip Guide
While the Kentucky General Assembly named milk the official state beverage in 2005, bourbon remains the iconic drink synonymous with the Bluegrass State. This powerhouse industry generates $8.6 billion annually in Kentucky, with over 70 active distilleries producing more than 200 brands.
In 1964, Congress designated bourbon as “America’s Native Spirit,” requiring it to be made in the U.S. Remarkably, about 95% of the world’s bourbon hails from Kentucky. The state's ideal conditions include nutrient-rich soil perfect for corn cultivation—a primary ingredient—pure water filtered through blue limestone aquifers, and a climate of cold winters and hot summers that enhances aging in charred oak barrels.
Armed with this knowledge, embark on a bourbon road trip across Kentucky (with a designated driver). Discover six standout distilleries, complete with tastings, tours, and nearby attractions.
