Sami Atacama Lodge Review: Eco-Friendly Luxury in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
After an inspiring summer exploring Europe and the United States, we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, to begin our unforgettable Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats tour. Anticipating the challenges of freezing temperatures at 4,800m altitude, basic meals, and three days of intense off-roading, we sought a serene retreat for relaxation and rejuvenation.
San Pedro de Atacama excels in luxury accommodations, with top-tier resorts charging over $500 per night. Mid-range options provide excellent value, leading us to choose Sami Atacama Lodge. This eco-friendly boutique bed-and-breakfast delivers guilt-free indulgence: a hot tub, swimming pool, sauna, massage services, and homemade organic breakfasts. Powered primarily by solar energy, the lodge employs ancient local irrigation techniques to create lush green spaces amid the surrounding desert.
Located a 30-minute walk from town—farther than most hotels—it offers a true off-the-beaten-path experience. (Note: The walk can take 15 minutes in ideal conditions, but high altitude, intense sun, or darkness can make it more strenuous.)
While many resorts and hostels provide complimentary shuttles to downtown, Sami Atacama Lodge does not. Our taxi driver was unfamiliar with it, turning arrival into an adventure.
Inside, the lodge is a tranquil haven. Originally a single cottage for boarders, it expanded to six unique rooms. Ours was exceptionally spacious: king-size bed, abundant fluffy pillows, a desk with ergonomic chair, extensive walk-in closet, and a luxurious bathroom featuring dual pedestal sinks, Jacuzzi tub, rainfall shower, plush towels, and slippers.
Exhausted from travel, we skipped dinner and retired early. Though TVs are absent from rooms to encourage digital detox and nature immersion, a shared one is available in the upstairs lounge. We slept soundly regardless.
The next morning's breakfast was outstanding: made-to-order omelets, fresh coffee, tea, hot milk, fruits, homemade yogurt, cakes, breads, cheeses, butter, and jams. After fueling up, we ventured to town for work (Wi-Fi was unreliable on-site) and returned to unwind. The outdoor Jacuzzi was occupied, and the $70/hour infrared sauna pricey, so we enjoyed wine ($3/glass), coffee, and the back patio couches while planning our Bolivia itinerary.
The lodge offers dinner, but town dining—from pizzas to fine set menus starting at $10—tempted us more. We biked into town at sunset using the lodge's complimentary bicycles. Stargazing with the back patio telescope was planned but challenging without instructions; it's a highlight in this clear desert sky.
The second breakfast was simpler, but the morning was productive: yoga in our room and photo editing in the cozy loft lounge with endless coffee.
Departure was seamless with a pre-arranged taxi to launch our adventure.
Standout Feature: Ultimate Relaxation
Beyond the room, relaxation abounds: upstairs loft lounge, outdoor white couches and loungers, pool/Jacuzzi deck chairs. It's peaceful to enjoy fresh air, afternoon sun, and greet fellow guests during their spa time.
Areas for Improvement: Shuttle Service and Signage
Local regulations limit signage to property lines, making it hard to spot. A shuttle from the bus station and to town would enhance accessibility.
Overall Verdict
After two restorative nights, Sami Atacama Lodge delivered the oasis we needed—ideal before (or after) the Bolivian salt flats. Minor inconsistencies in breakfast, bikes, and Wi-Fi don't detract from its charm as a peaceful desert escape.
