Villa Templeberg: Serene B&B Retreat Near Galle, Sri Lanka
I lounged on the vibrant orange sofa beneath three terrace windows overlooking lush tropical gardens. Two dogs relaxed on the front lawn, with only lizards sunbathing by the pool and distant monkeys audible. No tuk-tuks or crowds—just nature's symphony. Villa Templeberg offered the perfect escape.
Just 30 minutes earlier, I'd arrived via the crowded Colombo-Galle train. A staff member picked me up, and as we drove from Galle's bustle into the jungle atop a 5-acre coconut plantation, tension melted away. After busy days in Colombo and the TBCasia conference, this hilltop haven was ideal for writing and reflection.
This intimate B&B, 10 minutes by tuk-tuk from Unawatuna Beach and Galle on Sri Lanka's southeast coast, features six rooms: four in the main Dutch-colonial villa and two in a rear building. Its small scale creates exclusivity; the entire property sleeps up to 11.
I stayed in the Saffron Room, once the plantation's dining room. This spacious master suite boasts a king-size four-poster bed with canopy net, sofa, table, and walk-in closet leading to an expansive bathroom—larger than some hotel rooms—with double sink and rain shower in sleek design.
A private porch adjoined my room, opening to the main villa: other rooms, dining area, lounge, study, veranda, and garden encircled by coconut palms.
Purchased in the late 2000s by Australians Brent, Chris, and Karen from a German family, it became a B&B in 2012. Antique Sri Lankan furnishings preserve its colonial rustic charm alongside modern comforts.
Breakfast was a highlight: Chef Trixie served exceptional Sri Lankan egg hoppers, fresh tropical fruits, and tea—sustaining me all day.
Days passed writing on the terrace, chatting with host Karen and writer-in-residence Lucy in the rear bungalow. Ideal for a writer's retreat—whole villa from $300/night seasonally. Close beaches and Galle balance seclusion and convenience.
Standout Features
The Swimming Pool
Under construction during my visit but soon opening: a 25m (82ft) pool amid lush gardens—perfect for Sri Lanka's heat. I'll return to enjoy it.
The Atmosphere
The serene, romantic colonial vibe dissolved post-conference stress, fostering deep relaxation amid tranquility.
Room for Improvement
Bathrooms
Other rooms' bathrooms lag behind Saffron's; upgrades would elevate them, aligning with ongoing enhancements.

Local Information
Nearby Kuduruduwa Temple and attractions were mentioned late; in-room folders with tips, restaurants, and sites would enhance stays.
Overall
Villa Templeberg suits solo travelers, couples, or groups seeking quiet near Galle Fort (UNESCO), Unawatuna beaches, and dining. Unwind by the pool with a book and wine.
