Theva Residency Kandy: Luxury Hilltop Hotel with Stunning Views and Infinity Pool
While Kandy didn't initially captivate me beyond its iconic landmarks like the UNESCO-listed Temple of the Tooth Relic and the towering Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, it's an essential stop en route from Colombo to Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle or tea country.
The real allure lies in the surrounding lush green mountains, valley vistas, and refreshing breezes—a welcome respite from coastal heat.
Opting for elevated accommodations, I chose Theva Residency, a boutique hotel perched high above the city, offering an infinity pool with panoramic Hantana mountain views, an elegant restaurant terrace perfect for sunset dinners, and cozy rooms designed to maximize those vistas.
A 15-minute uphill drive from the train station revealed the hotel's modern glass facade, seamlessly blending with its spectacular setting. The tastefully designed restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious outdoor terrace. After a traditional Sri Lankan welcome with chilled towels and fresh juice, we settled into minimalist-chic rooms with large windows overlooking the infinity pool.
Each of the 15 rooms (1 penthouse, 3 suites, 7 superior balcony rooms, 4 deluxe rooms) showcases unique local artwork, powerful rain showers, and thoughtful details. Superior rooms and the penthouse include Jacuzzis with valley views—ideal for honeymoons or romantic escapes.
Tea and coffee facilities paired with homemade welcome treats allowed serene hilltop moments. The intimate restaurant delivered masterful Asian and international cuisine: pumpkin soup in bread, lemongrass sorbet, vegetable lasagna, fresh seafood, and decadent desserts like passion fruit cheesecake.
Breakfast was equally lavish: fresh juices, fruits, made-to-order eggs, pastries, and more.
I regretted not lingering longer by the pool or Jacuzzi.
