Polaroid of the Week: Serene Country Life in Kampot, Cambodia
This week, I've journeyed south along Cambodia's coast, pausing in charming Kampot before the beaches of Sihanoukville. I first fell for this peaceful river town in 2012 and was eager to witness its evolution. The town itself remains largely unchanged, aside from a few new guesthouses. However, its appeal to travelers has grown significantly—unlike my prior visit when accommodations were sparse, this time I struggled to find a vacancy amid full bookings. Riverfront bars and restaurants now hum with activity, solidifying Kampot as a staple on Cambodia's traveler itinerary.
Yet, beyond the river lies a tranquil countryside, untouched by crowds. Iconic wooden stilt houses punctuate the sun-baked fields, weary from the dry season. Farmers pedal home on vintage bicycles, mothers rest in hammocks as toddlers chase puppies and chicks. Cycling these dusty red lanes is delightful—children wave joyfully, teens giggle and offer shy 'hellos.' The languid pace of rural life here is infectious, slowing my own rhythm. Next, I look forward to leisurely beach days.
