Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Le Gîte del Sol B&B Review

Welcome to our Where to Stay In… series. Traveling full-time means we've tested countless hotels worldwide. While many budget options disappoint, gems like this one shine. In this edition on San Cristóbal de las Casas, we recommend Le Gîte del Sol, a charming B&B we've personally enjoyed.

Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Le Gîte del Sol B&B ReviewAfter a grueling overnight bus arriving at 7am in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico, we craved immediate check-in at Le Gîte del Sol. Expecting standard delays, we planned to wait on a park bench. But the welcoming French-Canadian and Mexican owners surprised us with their flexibility, treating us like valued guests at a boutique hotel—rare for budget stays in Mexico.

We hauled our bags five hilly blocks to the property, perfectly positioned for quiet streets yet close to action. Le Gîte del Sol—meaning 'Bed & Breakfast of the Sun' in French-Spanish—splits into two buildings: the main house with spacious en-suite rooms, shared kitchen, and sunny patio for breakfast; and a second building across the street with simpler budget rooms and shared baths.

Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Le Gîte del Sol B&B ReviewBoth are impeccably clean, thanks to on-site staff. Our budget room had no issues with shared facilities. Main house en-suites ($20 single, $26 double) offer superior comfort. Budget rooms ($13 single, $16 double) are basic—bed, desk, closet, hallway window—small with limited ventilation but daily cleaned. Perks include included breakfast, reliable free Wi-Fi, a spacious second-house kitchen with tables, computer, free water, and market-friendly setup.

Where to Stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas: Le Gîte del Sol B&B ReviewThe Mexican owner is detail-oriented and warm, remembering coffee preferences and travel chats. Her French-Canadian partner complements her, drawing from his traveler background to ensure memorable stays.

They also book tours and buses at town rates with honest advice, building trust.

Standout Feature: Breakfast

Included daily on the sunny patio: eggs and toast, toast alone, or cereal. Simple comfort food with welcome variety—uncommon in Mexican budget spots.

Standout Feature: Above-and-Beyond Service

On our early departure, owners served 6am breakfast to four guests. This personal touch—extra tips, seamless bookings—made us feel special throughout.

Room for Improvement: Budget Rooms

Second-house rooms lack decor and feel basic/small. Still, at these prices with breakfast and service, they're a steal in Mexico.

Le Gîte del Sol: Overall Verdict

This no-frills B&B elevates your San Cristóbal stay with heartfelt hospitality and zero hassles.

Typically, booking a B&B in England means expecting a cozy, traditional British home with charming, old-fashioned rooms that evoke a homely atmosphere. I adore B&Bs for their intimate scale—you often chat with the owners, creating a personal experience far removed from impersonal large hotels. However, some rooms can feel overly grandma-like; a funkier decor would be welcome.Tony and Paul, the visionary owners of Snooze in Brighton, deliver exactly that. Forget the standard British B&
