Discover San Sebastián del Oeste: A Magical Mountain Town in Jalisco

Magical town between mountainsIn the bowels of the Sierra Madre Occidental, is located San Sebastián del Oeste, Jalisco’s Pueblo Mágico. From among fog and behind mountains smell, wet earth and coal in the brazier, the first traces of its mountain architecture are revealed, which, stained with red tile on its gabled roofs, little by little reveals its white facades with terracotta stripes.

The town still maintains the mining trade. It is possible to find among its business, goldsmiths and jewelers passionated by silver who make unique pieces joined by opal and obsidian, religiously carved so that travelers who acquire them can take a piece of San Sebastián Del Oeste, Jalisco, and show it off in the eyes of the world.

History and admirable beauty in every cornerIn downtown, aside public square, an 18th century small church stands out—the Parroquia of San Sebastián Mártir, town’s patron saint. Inside, a striking aquamarine color contrasts with the quarry pillars and their vaults colored in light blue and pastel pink. Far from being daring, this combination contrasts with the uniform exteriors of their houses.

If you have spare time, explore its streets and contemplate the houses balconies adorned with bougainvillea, take a walk along its stone bridge and inhale pine trees, oaks and capomos aroma while breathing pure mountain air.

If you look carefully, high in the sky you’ll see hawks flying towards the forest and at night you will probably hear coyotes howling. In San Sebastián del Oeste fauna is part of the environment.

From Puerto Vallarta, it will take you around an hour and a half (42 miles) to get there. From Riviera Nayarit, the journey will be 2 hours and 15 minutes (68 miles), and 4 hours and 15 minutes (167 miles) from Guadalajara. All by car. As it’s located in the mountains, it has a humid climate with average annual temperature around 19 C (66 F), making it an ideal destination for any season.
