Know the Magical Town of Copper

 

Nestled in the Michoacán mountains one hour from the city of Morelia, in Salvador Escalante municipality, this Purepecha’s heritage town has shaped the preference among its visitors based on the strong hammering of the magical and experienced hands of its artisans who keep alive the tradition carving handicrafts in copper, hence the name of this community whose patron saint is Santa Clara.

 

Founded in 1553 by Augustinian missionaries, the Pueblo Mágico de Santa Clara del Cobre Michoacán (Magical Town of Santa Clara del Cobre in Michoacán), enjoys afternoons as tanned as the bright copper transformed behind each of the colonial-style houses so typical of the region. Most of them turned into workshops where the trade secrets are passed down from generation to generation.

 

Its friendly inhabitants, the beauty of its squares and gastronomy invite you to visit all its corners on a weekend, getting inside each of its traditions and customs.

To date, the town holds in high esteem Don Vasco de Quiroga, the first bishop of the state of Michoacán, who helped the master craftsmen to mix their prehispanic roots knowledge with the new techniques brought by the Spanish colonizers.

 

Among those the chiseling stood out, being fundamental for copper works manufacturing evolution. In this place religion and tradition merged with a harmonious result that enchants everyone who sets foot in it.

 

How to get to Santa Clara del Cobre?

 

Santa Clara del Cobre is located just one hour from the city of Morelia and 20 minutes from the Pueblo Mágico de Pátzcuaro (Magical Town of Pátzcuaro). Summer is one of the best seasons for visiting it, although it enjoys excellent weather throughout the year.
