Discover Santa Maria del Rio: The Cradle of the Rebozo & Colonial Charm

The Magical Town of Santa María del Río, also known as the “cradle of the rebozo”, is the most traditional municipality of San Luis Potosí thanks to the production of this garment. Surrounded by colonial mansions and ancestral buildings, this place will impress you, as it is perfect for taking a walk and being amazed by its ancient architecture, making your visit a true trip to the past.

 

But in other times it was territory of ancient Mesoamerican cultures, originally formed by the Otomí and Guachichil nations.


The friars who made the first waist cloths, taught this art to the Otomi Indians and with the passage of time, a mixture between cultures was spun to create the now called Magical Town of Santa María del Río.

 

Here the main wealth is the silk “rebozos” (shawls), which between threads and colors gave rise to the most famous in the region called “bolita”. Other very popular ones such as “barbilla”, “chalina” and “palomo” have been woven for years to preserve the culture of this region.

 

Where is Santa María del Río located?
It is located central- south, 48 kilometers (77 miles) from San Luis Potosí.

 

To get to this Magical Town, we recommend you take the direct route from San Luis Potosí (about an hour), it is a route that passes through the delegation of La Pila and Villa de Pozos.
