Located south of Oaxaca is the town of Santa Catarina Juquila, founded in 1272 and thanks to its religious importance it was given the category of municipal seat in 1795. Recently named Magical Town, this town is well known for being a sanctuary and one of the most significant religious pilgrimage centers in the country.

 

The Magical Town of Juquila is a special place for lovers of the traditional. In this destination you can admire the beauty it has, surrounded by vegetation and by the beautiful mountains of La Sierra Madre. Here several religious faithful come with the aim of knowing the mercy of the Virgin of Juquila.

 

Unexpected miracles

The famous legend of this town tells that when Fray Jordán de Santa Catalina arrived, he brought an image called La Purísima Concepción with him from Spain and gave it to a humble man, he placed it in his hut, which ended up catching fire, leaving with him only the image with slight burns, later various miracles were present.

 

The surrounding towns learned of these miracles and thanks to this the inhabitants of Juquila organized themselves to transfer the image to their community and thus the birth of a religious town began.

 

How to get to Santa Catarina Juquila?

There are different road routes to go to Santa Catarina Juquila, since it is located south of Oaxaca. Either from Puerto Escondido or Mexico City.

 

One of the main routes would be starting from Mexico City to Acapulco, this course consists of 5 hours, once in Acapulco, deviate to the Magical Town of Puerto Escondido, once there, take highway 131 towards Juquila, which will take towards the cruise known as '' El vidrio '', then take the Santa Catarina Juquila deviation and voila, you arrive at this small but incredible Magical Town.
