Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen: Award-Winning Luxury Resort Review
When the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen earned the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award just eight months after opening, it immediately caught my attention. Such rapid recognition signals exceptional quality and service.
Designed by renowned Mexican architect Sordo Madaleno and the award-winning New York-based Rockwell Group, this resort demanded a personal visit during my recent Yucatan road trip.
The Grand Entrance
Arrival sets an impressive tone: A spacious driveway leads to a massive fountain evoking a Mayan step pyramid.
Local culture and natural beauty are woven throughout, with preserved mangrove gardens visible from the grand entrance.
Rooms occupy U-shaped, four-story blocks surrounding the open central Paseo—a covered walkway featuring reception, concierge, coffee shop, and snack bars with stunning sea views.
Check-in included complimentary chilled champagne, easing us after our flight from New York and drive from Cancun Airport.
A porter handled luggage while we strolled open corridors adorned with wood, sand-colored stone, lush plants, and tasteful artwork by César López-Negrete, created exclusively for the resort. The design fosters a seamless connection to nature.
The artwork, featuring wood and metal, impressed continually, especially during morning walks to the Paseo amid grand architecture.

The Rooms
Our elegant, spacious room felt instantly welcoming, with contemporary furniture, balcony sun loungers, and a plush bed promising restful sleep.
Choose from 14 categories, from ocean-view rooms to luxurious swim-up suites sharing private pools. Executive suites on the fifth-floor bridge offer unparalleled Caribbean vistas.
All include dining areas, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, coffee makers, and semi-open bathrooms with double sinks. Timeless design incorporates natural wood elements.
Thoughtful touches like organic toiletries with mosquito spray address local challenges effectively.
The Showstopper: Infinity Pools
Though rooms are superb, time there was limited to sleep—the three infinity pools stole the show, rivaled only by the Cenote Spa. Sun loungers, including in-water options and comfy poolside "nests," tempted extended lounging.
Attentive staff deliver food and drinks poolside for ultimate relaxation.
The 460-foot beachfront offers direct access to turquoise waters, blending seamlessly with pool areas.
Award-Winning Cenote Spa
The 6,000 sq ft Cenote Spa, winner of Interior Design Best Project 2015, redefines luxury wellness.
Its cenote-inspired centerpiece features a circular pool in an igloo-shaped space—perfect for yoga or romantic dinners.
Treatments draw from Mexican traditions, like Mayan cocoa-tequila head massages. Facilities include steam room, sauna, plunge pools, Jacuzzi, and lap pool.

A spacious, modern gym with top equipment ensures fitness options.
Dining Excellence
Three restaurants: La Cocina (international with local ingredients), The Grill at 1|26 (steaks, seafood with sea views), and Raw Seafood Bar. El Paseo coffee bar adds convenience.

The Grill impressed with premium steaks and vegetarian options. La Cocina's breakfast buffet dazzled with global and Mexican selections—pastries were irresistible.
Non-all-inclusive policy encourages exploring Fifth Avenue; meal plans available (dinner $40, etc.).

Family & Entertainment Amenities
On-site coffee shop, movie theater with popcorn, Teen Arcade (ping pong, games), and kids' club with supervised activities, including children's dinners.

Beachfront weddings accommodate up to 314 rooms.
Prime Location
Steps from Fifth Avenue shops, bars, and Quinta Alegria Mall; on Mamita’s Beach. Walkable access beats taxi-dependent resorts.

Verdict: Five-Star Excellence
The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen earns perfect marks. Stylish rooms, infinity pools, spa, dining, and service deliver unmatched relaxation.
