Polaroid of the Week: Bangkok s Vibrant Concrete Jungle – City of Life

After accumulating several weeks in Bangkok across multiple recent visits—including one extended stay unexpectedly—it’s surprising that it hasn’t appeared in our Polaroid of the Week series until now. On my latest trip, I first noticed the city’s slogan, "City of Life." While not particularly inventive, it rings true: Bangkok hums with energy at all hours. As my final Thailand stop before returning to Hong Kong, it merits a feature. I’ve relished every 2023 visit (save for German Embassy errands) and grown fonder of the city than ever.

It remains not my world favorite, yet each stay brings joys like premium cinema experiences in cutting-edge theaters, exceptional coffee (a luxury after instant brews even in 4-star hotels elsewhere), splurging on Western comforts or Garrett’s Popcorn, Sunday hipster vibes at Chatuchak Market, and morning runs (typically in air-conditioned hotel gyms amid 38°C/100°F heat). I’ve launched quests for the ultimate rooftop bar views and top boutique hotels—detailed reviews coming soon.

Sorry for this week’s blog quiet; next week brings posts from three countries!

Tourist Attraction
  • Polaroid of the Week: Machu Picchu, the Majestic Lost City of the Incas

When we embarked on our global travels in April 2010, Machu Picchu topped our must-visit list. Little did we know it would take nearly four years to reach this iconic site.Last week, we arrived in Cusco and explored options for the classic Inca Trail trek, typically booked months ahead. Surprisingly, we found availability with just days notice through several agencies. Our research uncovered the Salkantay Trek—a less crowded alternative. We spontaneously committed to this challenging 5-day, 73-k

  • Polaroid of the Week: Rediscovering Picturesque Erfurt, Germany

Although visitors often fall in love with Erfurt, my hometown in Germany, I wasnt always a fan. The city boasts a magnificent cathedral, numerous historic churches and medieval buildings, and the renowned Krämerbrücke—a unique bridge in northern Europe covered with inhabited half-timbered houses (one of only three such bridges worldwide). Growing up there made these wonders feel ordinary. With a population of around 200,000, its not tiny, but I craved a grittier vibe beyond its picture-perfect f

  • Polaroid of the Week: Embracing Early Summer in New York City

This past week delivered glorious early summer weather to New York City, with average daily temperatures of 85°F (30°C). Balancing work with the outdoors was a challenge amid such ideal conditions. I made the most of every free moment, revisiting favorite parks including Prospect Park, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Washington Square Park. Highlights featured a cycling tour from Brooklyn to Harlem along the Brooklyn Bridge and Hudson River path, invigorating runs on the Brooklyn Bridge
