Polaroid of the Week: Agnes Denes' Living Pyramid Blooms at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens
After extensively exploring the Bronx last summer, I shifted my focus to Queens this year—New York City's largest borough, packed with hidden gems despite my past limited visits. Astoria remains my top spot, a vibrant Greek enclave now buzzing with trendy bars and artisanal coffee shops amid ongoing gentrification. The Metropolitan Opera's Summer Recitals at Socrates Sculpture Park provided the ideal reason to revisit this under-the-radar gem (soon featured in my upcoming 'Five Undiscovered New York Experiences' guide). Pair it with authentic Greek eats, local drinks, or a stunning Manhattan sunset from the park or nearby Rainey Park along the East River for an unbeatable free outing.
This compact park showcases rotating large-scale sculptures, including New York artist Agnes Denes' captivating Living Pyramid, installed in May. The 30-foot structure evolves through summer as plants and flowers thrive on its four sides. It created a magical setting for the opera recital, where my picnic on a flawless summer evening topped even the July 4th fireworks and rivaled last year's outdoor opera in Brooklyn Bridge Park (marred by rain this time). Queens holds endless surprises—share your favorite spots in the comments!
