Polaroid of the Week: 5Pointz, New York City's Legendary Street Art Haven

Polaroid of the Week: 5Pointz, New York City s Legendary Street Art Haven We cherish our readers, and our loyal followers know our deep passion for street art. Over brunch in Williamsburg, reader Laura tipped us off to 5Pointz—a hidden gem even many locals overlook. We wouldn't have found it without her! Thank you, Laura!

Dedicated entirely to street art, 5Pointz: The Institute of Higher Burnin’ was an open-air gallery in an abandoned Long Island City factory in Queens. Though graffiti remains illegal in NYC, the 1990s Graffiti Terminators initiative channeled artists here legally. In 2002, curator Meres One oversaw rotating murals by global talents.

5Pointz gained worldwide fame, drawing aspiring and established artists to its 200,000 sq ft of five-story walls. Our visit revealed more creators at work than casual tourists—visitors like us were true enthusiasts.

Update for accuracy: Sadly, 5Pointz was whitewashed and demolished in 2014 for luxury condos. Its legacy endures through preserved art nearby and documentaries. Street art lovers: explore NYC's evolving scene today!
