Polaroid of the Week: Ringing in 2017 from Vibrant Berlin

Happy New Year from Berlin!

My first Polaroid of 2017 comes from Berlin, Germany’s dynamic capital. After family holidays, I arrived for work and catch-ups with friends, but wove in exciting activities—like revisiting the city’s enchanting Christmas markets after over a decade away. Though recent tragic events cast a shadow, I adopted Berliners’ resilient mindset: “We won’t let fear spoil our holiday joy,” as crowds continued flocking to the markets with spirit intact.

Besides markets, I bar-hopped through Kreuzberg, shared panoramic views from the Park Inn hotel’s observation deck with a visiting friend, scaled 285 spiral steps to the Victory Column’s top, and strolled the East Side Gallery—the longest preserved Berlin Wall stretch, alive with international murals. Pro tip: Save open-air platforms for summer; the winter gusts were relentless.

Of course, I ate my way across town. Old favorites included Azzam for Lebanese fare, Anna Blume for decadent cakes, The Barn for exceptional coffee, and Hamy Cafe for authentic Vietnamese. New gems: Alsancak Simit Sarayi’s Turkish breakfast, Vagabund Brauerei’s craft beers, and Zweistrom’s Makali—a Lebanese sandwich bursting with fried carrots, cauliflower, eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, pickles, and tahini.

Despite the biting cold and 4 p.m. sunsets, returning to one of my favorite cities worldwide—even briefly—to welcome 2017 felt incredible. Bring on the year ahead!

Tourist Attraction
  • Polaroid of the Week: Embracing Early Summer in New York City

This past week delivered glorious early summer weather to New York City, with average daily temperatures of 85°F (30°C). Balancing work with the outdoors was a challenge amid such ideal conditions. I made the most of every free moment, revisiting favorite parks including Prospect Park, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Washington Square Park. Highlights featured a cycling tour from Brooklyn to Harlem along the Brooklyn Bridge and Hudson River path, invigorating runs on the Brooklyn Bridge

  • Polaroid of the Week: Crisp Autumn Vibes in Berlin s Historic Cemetery

While I typically gravitate toward Berlins vibrant outer neighborhoods, skipping the tourist-heavy Mitte (meaning central), this visit was different. Staying centrally positioned me perfectly for walking to the Festival of Lights installations, prompting a fresh exploration of the area. This choice revealed Mittes hidden treasures, especially its food scene. I savored exceptional Vietnamese spots like Madami, Pho Hoi, Good Morning Vietnam, and Chen Che; the ultimate vegan burrito (Vegan Lover at

  • Polaroid of the Week: Snowy New York City Transformed into a Winter Wonderland

After returning from Israel, I had just a few days in Germany to pack my essentials and bid farewell to friends and family before flying back to New York. Upon arrival, I realized how fortunate I was—flying a day later would have been impossible due to a massive blizzard that canceled over 1,700 flights across all three airports. As a first-time witness to such an intense snowstorm (Germany gets snow, but nothing like this), I was mesmerized watching 10 inches (30 cm) blanket the city in hours
