Housesitting a Remote Beach House in Mexico: Week 1 Experience
We’re writing from the stunning shores of Mexico’s Caribbean coast, just three days into our two-month housesit. Here are views from around the property:
The sun has cleared the morning clouds, and a refreshing sea breeze rustles through the palm leaves, cooling the hot, humid air. I alternate between typing and gazing at the shallow waters over the 200-meter barrier reef. Waves crash where the shelf drops into deep blue ocean. We can snorkel right from our backyard amid azure, cobalt, sapphire, teal, and navy hues. A neighboring housesitter goes daily—we plan to join her soon, once the owner departs after our training for the eight-week stay.
Living in one of Mexico’s most remote areas brings greater responsibility than our previous 10 housesits (this is our 11th in two years). Yet the pristine beauty is unparalleled—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we couldn’t pass up. We found this via housecarers.com, applying on a whim.
“Hey, want to housesit a beach house in Mexico for two months after Tracey’s wedding?” Dani asked months ago, spotting it among daily Housecarers emails. Remote location, private beach snorkeling, off-grid living—it caught her eye.
“We’ve handled solar from our Bavarian housesit,” I replied, “and need quiet for work.” No excuses; we applied. Two weeks later, among dozens of applicants, we were selected. References checked, tickets booked. We committed to a Mexican summer.
Typically a two-day handover, but here we’re learning solar maintenance in extreme remoteness. ‘Remote’ is relative—we’re deep in it. On the drive, endless mangroves and trees left us awestruck.
“Didn’t Angela* warn you how remote?” Tom* asked. “Yes,” we assured, though reality hit on arrival.
It exceeds expectations: hot water with rain shower, full kitchen, double bed, closets, couch, tables, beach chairs—all ocean views. Clean, modern nine-year-old build. Outdoor palapa with power, driftwood table by the sea.
“Your toughest morning choice: where to sip coffee,” Tom joked.
We’re thrilled for two months with our guard dog and nearby housesitters. Follow our updates on housesitting highs, lows, and beach adventures. Ask questions about global housesitting in comments!
