Polaroid of the Week: Embracing Spring on Chile's Northern Beaches

Polaroid of the Week: Embracing Spring on Chile s Northern BeachesAs avid beach lovers, we've cherished this travel year, but it lacked the salty ocean air and sandy shores we crave—especially after spending nearly six months on beaches last year. Even during recent beach visits, the water was too chilly for swimming, except in Southeast Asia or the Caribbean for Dani (Jess dives in almost anywhere).

Our last beach time was in sunny Uruguay before leaving South America last spring. After months in Germany and the U.S. without seeing the ocean, we're thrilled to return to South America's northern Chile beaches—just in time to chase summer as location-independent nomads, dodging northern hemisphere snows. Following a few days in Santiago to readjust to Latin American vibes, we headed to Pacific Coast gem La Serena. Sunny afternoons have us building tans, though the water remains too cold for swims. Next up: Iquique, then our favorite Chilean highlight, the Atacama Desert, en route to Bolivia.

  • Polaroid of the Week: Encountering Tropical Depression Matthew in Belize

Just 12 hours after arriving in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye—a vibrant island off Belizes coast—we faced Tropical Depression Matthew, our first major storm on this journey. Originally expected to strengthen into a hurricane, we watched locals board up windows and stockpile supplies on day two. Thankfully, it downgraded to a tropical depression, though strong enough to suspend ferry services to the mainland. We stayed put in San Pedro until it passed, with no major damage reported anywhere.

  • Polaroid of the Week: Spring Blooms in Southern Arizona s Catalina State Park

After 19 months away, Im thrilled to return to Southern Arizona—one of my favorite destinations worldwide and the place Ive revisited most since starting full-time travel in 2010. Housesitting in Tucson again means quality time with my beloved dog, baking and cooking in a well-equipped kitchen, deeper exploration of the area, and indulging in authentic Mexican cuisine. Springs blooming cacti are spectacular, and I eagerly anticipate photographing the iconic saguaros in Saguaro National Park whi
