Polaroid of the Week: Cayo Jutías – Cuba's Pristine Caribbean Beach Paradise
While Cuba evokes images of vibrant Spanish-colonial towns, lush tobacco fields, and Havana's historic architecture, its stunning Caribbean beaches often surprise. Featuring turquoise waters and palm-fringed shores, these hidden gems deserve a spot on any itinerary—as I discovered firsthand.
Cayo Jutías stands out as one of Cuba's most breathtaking beaches. Nearby Cayo Levisa is often hailed as the island's finest, but Cayo Jutías offers untouched miles of perfection. With no hotels—just a few restaurants—its remoteness (a bumpy 75-minute drive from Viñales along potholed roads) keeps crowds away. Every subsequent beach paled in comparison, yet all embodied classic Caribbean allure.
After enjoying a refreshing Coco Loco (fresh coconut with rum and honey), we ventured beyond the eateries to claim a private stretch of sand. Mangrove forests provide a unique backdrop, ideal for photography (see my April photo roundup). Following days in Havana and Viñales' countryside, Cayo Jutías delivered the ultimate serene beach escape.
