Polaroid of the Week: Spring Blooms in Southern Arizona s Catalina State Park

After 19 months away, I'm thrilled to return to Southern Arizona—one of my favorite destinations worldwide and the place I've revisited most since starting full-time travel in 2010. Housesitting in Tucson again means quality time with my beloved dog, baking and cooking in a well-equipped kitchen, deeper exploration of the area, and indulging in authentic Mexican cuisine. Spring's blooming cacti are spectacular, and I eagerly anticipate photographing the iconic saguaros in Saguaro National Park while they're at their peak.

This photo was taken on a hike through Catalina State Park, where narrow trails wind through a breathtaking saguaro-filled landscape at the base of the Catalina Mountains. Next week, I'll tackle more trails, revisit favorites, try new Tucson restaurants, and drive the scenic Catalina Highway—6,000 feet of elevation gain over 27 miles, transitioning from desert lowlands to alpine forests.

How did you spend your week?

  • Photo of the Week: Horses Galloping at Dawn at White Stallion Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Ive explored the Southwest five times over the past few years, but it wasnt until my sixth visit this year that I finally experienced a genuine working dude ranch—complete with cowboys, horses, cattle, and breathtaking Sonoran Desert scenery: towering saguaro cacti, dusty trails, and rugged mountains. It took six years, but my introduction to Southwest ranch life was unforgettable at the renowned White Stallion Ranch just outside Tucson. My friend Lynn invited me one morning to photograph the ho
