Polaroid of the Week: Refreshing Escape to Mount Lemmon, Arizona

Last week, we took our dog Millie to Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains to escape the relentless Arizona heat of 109°F (43°C). The ascent to 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) brought welcome relief for all three of us. Remarkably, the ecosystem shifts dramatically with elevation—from the cactus-studded Sonoran Desert at the base to a pine forest akin to Southern Canada's landscape at the summit.

Returning to South America years later, we focused on Argentina and Chiles summer, flying into Buenos Aires and reaching no farther north than Peru. Now, ne

Home to over 1 million of these iconic cacti, many reaching 6 to 20 feet tall, the park offered an awe-inspiring hike under their toweri
