Polaroid of the Week: Hong Kong's Electrifying Nightlife and Skyline
With two major posts dropping this weekend, I'm sharing this week's Polaroid a bit early.
I've finally visited Hong Kong—a destination on my bucket list for years. Now, I'm wondering why I didn't come sooner! I'll return through here on my way back to Europe, so I took it easy this time. Arriving exhausted after my fifth country this month, I skipped the hikes and long sightseeing treks I'd planned.
The city's intensity—the crowds, noise, and energy—overwhelmed me for the first two days. It took time to readjust to solo exploration after guided tours in places like Stockholm and Istanbul. I also had some planning mishaps, which I'll detail in a future post.
With only blue skies on day one, I wasn't too disappointed about missing the Tian Tan Big Buddha or The Peak viewpoint on Hong Kong Island—saving them for my return. Instead, I wandered markets and neighborhoods, discovered excellent local coffee shops (one rivaling my all-time favorite), admired the magnificent skyline, and people-watched along the waterfront. A friendly expat introduced me to cool bars, including a sky lounge with breathtaking skyline views, and shared insights on expat life. It reinforced how connecting with locals offers a richer perspective than guidebooks alone.
This was especially true in Manila, often criticized as chaotic but transformed with a local's tips on hidden gems. More on that in tomorrow's monthly roundup!
