Essential Hong Kong Travel Tips: Lessons from My Second Visit
After a disappointing first trip to Hong Kong marred by poor planning, jet lag, and exhaustion, I returned determined to make the most of this vibrant city. My second visit delivered: energized from a short flight from Bangkok, I checked into the cozy OZO Wesley Hotel with stunning views of Hong Kong Island. I immediately explored Wan Chai and left six days later fully satisfied. Drawing from two visits, here are my expert tips for an unforgettable Hong Kong experience, including top eateries, coffee shops, and bars.
I arrived refreshed and eager. Wandering Wan Chai's streets set the perfect tone. Read on for strategies to maximize your time in this dynamic destination.
Pro Tips for Visiting Hong Kong
Wander Without a Strict Itinerary
On past trips to cities like New York, London, and Paris, I rushed through checklists of sights, missing the city's soul. In Hong Kong, my best moments came from aimless wandering—following intriguing alleyways, drawn by coffee aromas. This led me to favorites in PoHo and Wan Chai, my top neighborhoods.
Research Dining Options in Advance
My first visit struggled with finding vegetarian spots amid thousands of eateries. Hungry and unplanned, I settled for mediocre meals. This time, pre-research ensured every bite was exceptional. Hong Kong's global scene satisfied cravings for pizza, coffee, French pastries, brunch, and dim sum. (Recommendations below.)
Choose Your Stay Strategically
Staying in Kowloon first, I preferred Hong Kong Island's energy on return—Wan Chai and Lan Kwai Fong (LKF). Key advice: Select hotels near buses, trams, or MTR stations with nearby dining.
Embrace Iconic Tourist Spots
While I love getting lost, must-sees like the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, Avenue of Stars stroll, 8pm Central light show, Peak views, and Ladies' Market shopping are worthwhile.
Crowds exist, but hike the Peak trail (HKD40/US$5.16 saved) for quieter paths and a 1-hour summit loop.
Build in Extra Time
Extra days helped combat jet lag on visit one and weather on two—ideal for Peak views on clear days.
