Exploring Minca, Colombia: Waterfall Hikes, Coffee Farms & Epic Mountain Views
Minca wasn’t on my original Colombia itinerary, but an Instagram follower’s tip as we left Cartagena for Santa Marta changed that. A quick search revealed this charming mountain village near Santa Marta, famed for waterfall hikes, vegetarian eats, coffee farms, and a massive hammock with stunning vistas. Cooler temps after Santa Marta’s sweltering heat sealed the deal for this detour.
The drive up the winding mountain road took just an hour, and we explored the tiny village shortly after arriving—it’s that compact.

The promised chill was a myth: 86°F still! We grabbed swimsuits and hiked to Pozo Azul, the first of two nearby waterfalls (in opposite directions from town).
This two-tiered cascade, an hour uphill toward Finca Victoria—the region’s largest coffee plantation—tempted with jumps from the upper tier. But the freezing water deterred me. I watched brave jumpers splash while bonding with local strays.
Descending, we paused at a waterhole for Sierra Nevada brews, savoring mountain views.
Next day’s adventure: hiking to Casa Elemento’s iconic hammock and vistas, stopping at Marinka waterfalls. After a sweaty hour, we cooled in its quieter pools (no jumps).
Opting for a mototaxi up and walk down saved energy.
The 25-minute ride proved wise—it’s farther than expected (one traveler took three hours on foot). A COP10,000 (~US$3.40) day pass granted hammocks, pool, a drink, and Jungle Town tree-top tours.
The views were breathtaking; I regretted missing sunset.
No WiFi, pure nature—ideal for disconnecting.
Three hours back to Minca, rewarded by Lazy Cat dinner (a must-visit).
Final day: Finca Victoria coffee tour. As coffee enthusiasts, we loved it—even post-Guatemala. Century-old machines impressed; picker pay stunned:
- 14 kg – 5,000 COP (~US$1.70)
- 28 kg – 10,000 COP (~US$3.40)
- 48 kg – 20,000 COP (~US$6.80)
From harvest to export (COP3,000/kg ~US$1), the process fascinated. Premium beans go abroad; local quality lags—save for Juan Valdez or San Alberto.

Coffee-laden packs in tow, we descended smiling. This detour was Colombia’s highlight.
