Firefly: Sir Noël Coward's Iconic Hilltop Estate in Jamaica
Perched on expansive lawns atop a hill 5 km east of Oracabessa and 5 km west of Port Maria, Firefly was the cherished home of Sir Noël Coward, the legendary English playwright, songwriter, actor, and wit. The site predates him with ties to the infamous pirate Sir Henry Morgan. Upon Coward's death in 1973, he bequeathed the estate to his partner Graham Payn, who donated it to Jamaica.
Your guide will escort you through Coward’s art studio, where Winston Churchill tutored him in oil painting. View his original works and photos with famous friends. The drawing room, table still set, hosted the Queen Mother, Sophia Loren, and Audrey Hepburn. The upper lounge's glassless window reveals Jamaica's most breathtaking coastal vista over Port Maria Bay and beyond. Note: Coward wrote 'A Room with a View' in Hawaii in 1928, not here.
Coward is buried under a simple white marble slab on the lawns where he entertained stage and screen stars. A nearby dance floor covers his former pool; today, the house hosts exclusive society weddings.
