Discover Muyil: A Historic Maya Archaeological Site & Lagoon

One of the most impressive archeological zones is Chunyaxche, better known as Muyil, which is the name of one of the closest lagoons. This site is located 6 kilometers from Carrillo Puerto highway.

 

When Mayan culture was in its heyday Muyil worked as an oral and as a customs place for travelers. You will find spectacular views of the mangroves. This is also the best spot to watch the different and beautiful birds that live here.

 

Be ready to lose yourself through the roads in this jungle, or in its antique waterways. We recommend that you explore this place with a guide, since they will know where the different prehispanic edifications are.

 

Among the different constructions that you will be able to admire through its 38 hectares there are pyramidal foundations, religious structures and rooms. One of the most popular is The Castle with an impressive construction of 17 meters. In its summit you will see a temple that was full of offerings when it was discovered.

 

Noteworthy as well is the Templo 8, better known as the Pink Palace, which was an important religious and civic center in the ancient city. It is surrounded by amazing mural paintings that uses mineral pigments and pottery.

 

As part of the route you will have the chance of visiting the water channels built by the Mayans to get to the Muyil lagoon and then, get to the point where the sea meets it. This used to be an important spot for commercial transactions in Cozumel.

 

When you arrive to the second lagoon, Chunyaxche, you will immediately understand why it is popularly known as the Jewel of Sian Ka’an. You will be absolutely enchanted with its 800 meters of crystalline waters that fuses with the relaxing sounds of nature.
