Polaroid of the Week: Botero's Sculptures Spark Joy in Medellín, Colombia

Polaroid of the Week: Botero s Sculptures Spark Joy in Medellín, ColombiaAfter exploring Colombia's coffee region, I finally arrived in Medellín—a long-awaited highlight on my journey. Grateful for local friends who introduced me to the city's vibrant nightlife and generously hosted me.

Not every plan panned out: the popular walking tour was fully booked, an alternative fell through (perhaps I missed the meeting point?), and afternoon downpours thwarted my rides on Medellín's famous cable cars into the mountains.

One success was immersing myself in Fernando Botero's bronze sculptures scattered across the city, with over 20 at Parque de Las Esculturas, opposite the outstanding Museum of Antioquia (home to an extensive Botero collection). As a longtime admirer of Colombia's most celebrated painter and sculptor, these were absolute highlights—I'd anticipated this for years.

I crafted my own walking tour and relished wandering Medellín's streets—the best way to truly feel a city's pulse beyond tourist checklists. In upscale Poblado, we stumbled upon a lively salsa dance-off, a mesmerizing spectacle. Another gem: Parque Periodista, a cozy central park buzzing with young locals and hipsters grabbing cheap drinks (beers for just 50 cents!) from nearby stores, sipping outdoors with friends. I'll miss this public drinking freedom back in the U.S.!

Wrapping up, I visited the Museum of Modern Art before departing sooner than planned—not just Medellín, but all of Colombia after two months. Craving new scenery, I headed to an unexpected destination (not the one from my February roundup). Fate, serendipity, or chance guided me—stay tuned for next week's Polaroid to discover where!

  • Polaroid of the Week: Tayrona National Park s Jungles and Pristine Beaches, Colombia

As this post goes live, Im deep in the Colombian jungle, midway through my 5-day trek to Ciudad Perdida, Colombias legendary Lost City, navigating snakes and spiders with caution. The past week was productively relaxed. After 10 unforgettable days in charming Cartagena—which I delayed leaving—I returned to Santa Marta. Last month, I based here for quick trips to Tayrona National Park and Bahia Concha, barely exploring the city. Now, post-trek, Ill discover more. Santa Marta has pleasantly surpri

  • Polaroid of the Week: Vibrant Street Art in Cali, Colombia

After visiting the stunning Las Lajas Sanctuary, I was eager to explore Cali, Colombias third-largest city and the worlds salsa capital. During my nine-week journey through Colombia last year, I had envisioned spending a week or two there taking salsa lessons—a popular rite of passage for solo female travelers. However, a last-minute flight to Mexico derailed those plans. My enthusiasm waned upon reading this cautionary note from Wikitravels Stay Safe section (dated 2016): Drive-by robberies

  • Polaroid of the Week: A Broken Ankle in Peru After Conquering Machu Picchu

Our hike to Machu Picchu was flawless—one of the most exhilarating adventures of our global travels. Two days later, a harsh reminder of lifes unpredictability: I rolled my ankle descending the hostel stairs and heard it snap. Id love to spin a heroic yarn of chasing thieves or dodging traffic, but it was a simple, all-too-human misstep. This setback stung deeply, coming right after our recovery from a grueling three-week stomach bug in Bolivia, just as we were eager to dive back into exploring.
