Hotel Tip of the Week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia – A Traveler's Honest Review

Welcome to our Hotel Tip of the Week series. As full-time travelers, we've stayed in countless hotels worldwide, from budget stays to luxury retreats. We only recommend properties we've personally experienced that offer comfort, cleanliness, great value, and genuine hospitality. This week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia.

For Dani, one of travel's timeless joys is capturing each sunset. On our recent Melaka trip, The Sterling Hotel's rooftop bar provided the perfect vantage point to watch the sky ignite in vibrant pinks and oranges, fading to deep purples over the colonial cityscape.

Hotel Tip of the Week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia – A Traveler s Honest ReviewTucked away off Little India’s main street, this stunning three-story colonial building features grand entrance columns. Melaka's history as a key Asian port blends British, Chinese, Dutch, Indian, Japanese, and Portuguese influences—we were eager to see how it reflected inside.

Instead, we discovered a sleek, modern interior with freshly renovated rooms in sophisticated black, white, and mauve tones. Our Riley room felt exceptionally spacious, enhanced by strategic mirrors and floor-to-ceiling curtains. The king bed was plush with ample pillows, and the rare carpet underfoot was a welcome luxury after months in Southeast Asia. Hotel Tip of the Week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia – A Traveler s Honest ReviewThe bathroom boasted a cool stone floor and oversized Jacuzzi, though its awkward positioning made entry tricky, and scalding water jetted unpredictably—even technicians couldn't fully fix it.

Splurge on the Churchill Suite at $300/night for a swivel TV, enormous bed, living area, and palatial bathroom (with properly oriented Jacuzzi). Brighton rooms offer simpler outdoor Jacuzzis—ideal for stargazing.

Hotel Tip of the Week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia – A Traveler s Honest ReviewThe hotel shines in eco-friendliness: 90% LED lighting, efficient air-conditioning, solar-heated water, and a 320-liter rainwater collection tank for property use.

An air of refined elegance prevails, with thoughtful touches like nightly Malaysian candies on pillows, daily weather reports bedside, local modern art in hallways, and soft classical music. Dani savored post-sunset relaxation with in-room coffee, the morning paper, and ambient tunes. Hotel Tip of the Week: The Sterling Boutique Hotel in Melaka, Malaysia – A Traveler s Honest Review

Standout Feature: Exceptional Staff

On our final morning, rushing for an early airport bus, Dani left her wallet in the Loft Restaurant. Moments later, our waiter delivered it downstairs—one of many instances of proactive, enthusiastic service. This young hotel's organized team will quickly resolve any teething issues. Room for Improvement: Breakfast

A luxury boutique hotel excels with fresh, lavish breakfasts (ideally complimentary). Here, coffee was dilute, the 'Fitness' option included white bread instead of promised wholegrain, hash browns were frozen, jams lackluster, and juices canned. Positives: Dani's Spanish omelets and fresh fruit.

Overall: The Sterling Hotel in Melaka

Minor flaws pale against outstanding service and value. After scouting Melaka, The Sterling stands out—more intimate and affordable than larger chains. Phase two promises a pool; maximizing the rooftop bar and Loft Restaurant could make it a dining/nightlife hub.
