Mountain Paradise Hotel Review: Luxurious Retreat with Volcano Views in La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Arriving through the security gate and up the winding driveway, surrounded by prehistoric-looking flowers and exotic grasses, we knew we were early for check-in. At 11 a.m.—just after breakfast, with guests departing and rooms being cleaned—we simply wanted to drop our bags and hike the base of Arenal Volcano in the national park. But entering the lobby of Mountain Paradise Hotel, we were instantly captivated by the warm, professional staff.
Greeted with refreshing cold towels, we freshened up before completing check-in forms. A waiter then served complimentary blended fruit drinks. After a short wait on one of the lobby's plush couches, our luggage was loaded onto a golf cart, and we were whisked across the expansive property along narrow paths winding through lush tropical plants and colorful cottages.
True to its name, Mountain Paradise Hotel is a Costa Rican Eden with around 30 cottages scattered throughout. Our spacious room occupied half of one cottage, set far back on the property. The private back patio featured a Jacuzzi and rocking chairs perfect for watching wildlife. On the edge of Arenal National Park, the grounds teemed with birds—from hummingbirds flitting in the bushes to Great Currassows, massive turkey-like birds with bright yellow beaks, casually strolling across our yard. These rare sightings drew guests from nearby cottages in awe.
The room tempted us to skip our hike: a coffee maker, king and queen beds, flat-screen TV above the patio door, or relaxation under the bathroom's waterfall shower.
Our expansive bathroom—a true wet room—boasted a waterfall shower with rocks and flowers, plus a stand-up Jacuzzi with massaging jets. It included a private toilet room, sink, plush towels, and adjustable lighting—larger than many hotel rooms we've experienced worldwide.
Despite the room's luxury, the pool area beckoned. The large, heated pool features a swim-up bar where guests of all ages gather. A private whirlpool hides behind a waterfall, with sun loungers and hammocks in a shaded area nearby.
We ventured out for a volcano hike and La Fortuna Waterfall visit, returning exhausted to sink into the king bed.
Breakfast buffets, included in the rate, offered made-to-order omelets, Costa Rican gallo pinto, fresh fruits, yogurts, cold cuts, cheeses, toast, pastries, juices, and unlimited coffee. The spacious restaurant, near the pool and lobby, serves lunch and dinner with stunning Arenal Volcano views, though we found prices slightly high.
Every staff member was friendly, attentive, and eager to chat with guests.
Stand-out Feature: The Stunning Grounds
Mountain Paradise lives up to its name. Beyond private waterfalls, Jacuzzis, and the heated pool, strolling paths lined with exotic plants—spotting blue morpho butterflies and hummingbirds—rivaled the best jungle hikes we've done in Costa Rica or elsewhere.
Room for Improvement: Wi-Fi Reliability
Ideal for vacationers, the patchy cottage Wi-Fi isn't a deal-breaker. Common areas like the restaurant offer better access, used by other guests for emails and work. Strong room signals would perfect this paradise.
Overall: Highly Recommended
On our final day, seeking the best volcano viewpoint, we realized the hotel offered superior vistas. Among La Fortuna/Arenal options—from grand resorts to cozy spots—Mountain Paradise stood out. Its affordable luxury outshines pricier "exclusive" neighbors.
