Hotel Tip of the Week: Yellow House – Antigua Guatemala's Premier Budget Guesthouse

Welcome to our Hotel Tip of the Week series. With 365 days a year on the road, we've encountered the world's best and worst accommodations. We personally vet every recommendation after staying and testing them ourselves. This week: The Yellow House in Antigua, Guatemala.

Nestled just two blocks west of Antigua's iconic La Merced church (explore all our Antigua tips in our Antigua Guatemala Travel Guide), the Yellow House is easy to miss. A modest brown sign marks the entrance, obscured by travel agency signs for shuttles, flights, and tours. Even after three weeks of intermittent stays, we occasionally walked right past it.

Yellow House Hotel: Antigua's Top Budget Guesthouse

Step through the doors past the agency, and discover a budget haven packed with comforts—and free of unnecessary frills.

Hotel Tip of the Week: Yellow House – Antigua Guatemala s Premier Budget GuesthouseDownstairs offers two dorms (up to four guests each), two doubles, and four shared bathrooms. These rooms are spacious and cozy, but prioritize one of the seven upstairs rooms if possible: six doubles and one compact single, many with views of La Merced church, mountains, or the expansive terrace. For $1 extra per night, claim the room with its private terrace section—complete with flowers, volcano vistas, and a 'private' sign for intimate dinners.

Expect modern comforts: plush beds with crisp white linens, fluffy pillows, handmade Guatemalan blankets, insect-proof screens, bedside tables, lamps, ample storage hooks, and premium cable TV. Guests from their 20s to 60s often retreat to these inviting rooms for cozy evenings in.

In pricey Antigua, the communal kitchen is a game-changer. Though compact and improvable (details below), it lets you cook, chill drinks, and dine al fresco on the terrace—like home away from home.

Hotel Tip of the Week: Yellow House – Antigua Guatemala s Premier Budget GuesthouseBreakfast is included and surpasses typical budget fare: pancakes or porridge, four fresh fruits (watermelon, orange, banana, pineapple), scrambled eggs, black beans, peppers-and-onion potatoes, rolls, sweet bread, coffee, or tea. Portions were generous early on but slimmed during peak season when fully booked.

Standout Feature: Spotless Bathrooms – Exceptionally Clean

The four shared bathrooms (two with showers) gleam, often smelling of fresh bleach. The entire property stays impeccably tidy, with staff proactively cleaning and maintaining everything. Budget travelers know clean bathrooms are rare; not here. Private, lockable doors, abundant toilet paper and soap, and solar-heated showers via proper heads (no risky electric ones). Pro tip: Shower afternoons (3-5 PM) for optimal warmth—mornings are chilly.

Standout Feature: The Rooftop Terrace

This gem features three tables, a couch, armchairs, hammocks under cover, plus open-air options. Wi-Fi is strong here and in upstairs rooms (weaker downstairs). It buzzes at times, offers solitude others—perfect for volcano gazing.

Room for Improvement: The Kitchen

In this stellar budget spot, the kitchen disappoints. Too small for shared staff/guest use, and the fridge overflows—with breakfast prep crowding guest space. Staff could better manage expiration dates and relocate their supplies to the ample office space behind the agency.

Overall Verdict: Our Antigua Home Base

The Yellow House was our base for over three weeks, and we weren't alone—multiple guests returned mid-stay. It books solid daily, so reserve ahead or arrive early. It's our #1 budget pick in Guatemala.
