Casa Kreyenberg: Valparaiso's Charming Historic Hostel with Epic Views (Permanently Closed Since 2021)
Important Update (2021): Casa Kreyenberg has permanently closed since our visit to Valparaíso.
Perched atop Cerro Alegre on Avenida Alemania in Valparaíso, Chile, Casa Kreyenberg was run by the welcoming Chilean couple, Juan Pablo and Lucía.
Lucía inherited the early 20th-century home from her grandfather's German friend, Herr Kreyenberg. The duo began renting rooms about six years ago, initially to locals before pivoting successfully to travelers with a simple roadside sign.
This award-winning hostel evoked the cozy feel of a German grandmother's home, with original antique radios, ceramic spice jars, vintage wallpaper, and bone-handled knives for breakfast spreads. The included breakfast featured fresh fruit salad, cheese, ham, rolls, butter, marmalade, tea, and coffee, enjoyed communally around the wooden dining table where guests bonded over travel tales.
Early mornings sparked easy conversations, turning planned two-night stays into weeks—even ours extended from five to seven. Evenings drew guests to the terrace with Juan Pablo and Lucía for wine, chats, and twinkling city lights below.
Valparaíso's beauty shone from every angle. Our double room boasted port and hillside views from the window and shared balcony. The six-bed dorm and downstairs double also offered stunning vistas, adorned with Lucía's talented original paintings, turning the house into a private gallery.
The spacious, spotless room featured a comfy king bed, bedside tables, lamps, antique wardrobe, dresser, and creak-free wooden floors. Though sharing bathrooms, it felt ideal for longer stays. Elevated position ensured quiet nights, despite daytime buses nearby.
Three well-stocked bathrooms (two upstairs, one down) stayed impeccably clean. Guests lingered on the terrace, living room couch, or kitchen (available after 1 PM), fostering a true home-away-from-home vibe for relaxation amid Valparaíso's charm.

Standout Feature: Breathtaking Terrace Views
Unmatched in its price range, the terrace overlooked the city, port, naval ships, and colorful hills. Sunrises, sunsets, and night lights captivated 24/7. For December visitors, it promised prime New Year's fireworks views—one of South America's best!

Standout Feature: Exceptional Hosts—Juan Pablo and Lucía
The couple's warmth shone through, like hosting a spontaneous Sunday asado barbecue where guests connected. They offered invaluable travel tips and support, elevating every stay.

Room for Improvement: Minor Updates for Enhanced Comfort
The authentic charm thrived on originals, but upgrades like showerheads, kitchenware, dishes, and utensils would polish the experience without diminishing character.
Overall Verdict
TripAdvisor raves echo our enthusiasm, with many deeming it South America's best budget stay. As our first of many, it set an impossibly high bar—proving its legendary status.
