Hotel Monaco Denver Review: Stylish Boutique Excellence in Downtown CO
Upon checking into the Hotel Monaco in Denver, we were immediately captivated by the impressive lobby ceiling. A playful encounter with a familiar 'attacker' from our past travels led to laughs and re-enactment photos. This superior downtown Denver boutique hotel embodies cowboy western chic throughout, though our suite featured a subtle equestrian theme—highlighted by an equestrian painting in the bedroom and a stunning white horse-head lamp in the living room that stole the show.
We sank into the supremely comfortable beds piled high with the fluffiest pillows, savoring the room's bold, vibrant design—a standout feature we'll detail below.
Our previous stay at Hotel Helix in Washington, DC (review here), introduced us to Kimpton properties, and we loved it. While Hotel Monaco offers a more refined sensibility than Helix's playful excess, it retains those signature fun quirks. We enjoyed the animal-print bathrobes and cow-skin blanket, cozying up for a relaxing evening with red wine, a cheeseboard, and one of the two flat-screen TVs.
The minibar was thoughtfully stocked with adult favorites: almonds, cashews, dried berries, Clif bars, and bottled water—a step up from Helix's playful candies. No in-room coffeemaker, but the lobby transforms into a morning café with coffee, decaf, flavorings, ice, and to-go cups.
The bathrooms feel slightly dated compared to the rooms but are redeemed by premium C.O. Bigelow toiletries that left my hair shinier and bouncier than in months.
After exhausting the shampoo on night one and working late (opting out of midday cleaning), we were thrilled by the turndown service: a fully refreshed room, crisply made bed with five chocolate fish on the nightstand, tidied living area, and fresh toiletries in the bathroom.
These thoughtful touches are Hotel Monaco hallmarks. TripAdvisor reviewers rave about similar surprises, like complimentary wine for late arrivals, anniversary champagne, suite upgrades, and valet tips for cheaper parking nearby (saving us from the $31 overnight fee).
Free Wi-Fi (via the complimentary Kimpton In-Touch program; otherwise $10) was flawless. In town for a wedding, we had little time for the lobby, fitness center, Veda Salon and Spa, or acclaimed Panzano restaurant (a U.S. Top 100 dining spot).
Standout Feature: Bold, Inviting Design
Hotel Monaco isn't a stark design hotel, but its clashing blues and oranges, striking artwork, bold accessories (like that horse-head lamp), and warm reddish-brown woods create an irresistibly cozy vibe. We never wanted to leave.
Room for Improvement: Promote Perks Better
Many perks flew under our radar until post-stay research: pet-friendly (with goldfish for non-pet guests), $10 minibar credit for In-Touch members, free morning newspapers, and rumored bike rentals.
Overall: Hotel Monaco Denver
The only minor critique is better promotion of guest extras. What sets Hotel Monaco—and Kimpton hotels—apart is making travel feel special amid cookie-cutter chains. We'll return to explore more.
