Hotel Tip of the Week: La Candelaria Hostel in Valladolid, Mexico – Top Budget Stay Near Chichén Itzá
Welcome to our weekly Hotel Tip of the Week series. Traveling full-time means we've tested countless accommodations. Amid budget options that disappoint, gems like this shine. We recommend only places we've personally experienced, proving budget travel can be comfortable and enjoyable. Wondering where to stay in Valladolid? Look no further!
We've highlighted this Mexican hostel in our Valladolid guide and our 33 favorite things about Mexico, but a dedicated review is overdue.
Nestled on a peaceful square in Valladolid, a serene colonial town on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula near the iconic Chichén Itzá ruins, La Candelaria is managed by a Dutch-Nicaraguan couple. Their dedication, travel savvy, and attention to thoughtful details elevate guest comfort and satisfaction.
Just a 10-minute walk from the bus station, we received a warm welcome with a full tour of the property and amenities, instantly feeling at home. Staff provided a marked map highlighting key sights, nearby cenotes, top eateries, and ATMs.
En route to our room, we met the hostel's charming resident Chihuahuas and cat, always ready for cuddles or comic relief.
Private rooms on two levels overlook a spacious courtyard. We stayed in two different ones: both featured firm, comfy beds with plush pillows, crisp white linens, cable TV, a small table, and authentic Mexican decor. Dorm options in the main building separate genders (women upstairs, men downstairs) with secure lockers. Cozy communal lounges offer sofas, TVs, instruments, and games, fostering a homey vibe.
Shared bathrooms for dorms are indoors; private rooms use outdoor facilities on each level. All are impeccably clean, with powerful showerheads delivering reliable hot water.
Book lovers will appreciate the shaded hammocks under trees, away from the expansive outdoor kitchen (a standout feature detailed below, alongside the indoor one).
The covered courtyard seating—with long tables, chairs, and optimal Wi-Fi—is ideal for socializing, relaxing, or working. A guest computer is available at reception.
Valladolid's excellent roads make biking ideal for exploration. La Candelaria rents eight stylish blue cruiser bikes in top condition at competitive local rates.

Standout Features of La Candelaria Hostel
Free Breakfast
Unlike typical hostel offerings of weak coffee and toast, La Candelaria delivers traveler-approved perfection: pre-portioned fruit, granola, and yogurt bowls, fresh rolls with butter and jam, and robust coffee from a large pot. This makes it the best hostel in Valladolid hands down.
Two Fully Equipped Kitchens
One indoor, one outdoor—both spacious for group cooking, with dual fridges and basics like oil, salt, sugar, and spices provided free. Self-caterers, this seals the deal for your Valladolid stay.
Room for Improvement
La Candelaria is near-perfect, but like many open-air tropical spots, watch food to avoid ants. Outdoor showers require walking in a towel, though we found it unproblematic.
La Candelaria Hostel: Overall Verdict
Social yet serene, with stellar breakfast, spotless facilities, and unbeatable value—our top Mexico hostel pick. We returned for more relaxed days before Belize. Private rooms were cheapest yet feature-packed. As a Chichén Itzá hotel alternative, it's superior to Cancún/Playa del Carmen for early, stress-free access.
