Casa Roa B&B Review: Authentic Mexican Charm in Mexico City's Satelite Neighborhood
Exhausted from travel, with aching bones and heavy eyelids, my companion Dani and I arrived at Casa Roa, a welcoming B&B in Mexico City, well after midnight. True to its motto Mi Casa es Su Casa (My House is Your House), we were greeted warmly despite the late hour and collapsed into bed without taking in our surroundings.
Our first real impression came the next morning. Sunlight filtered through tiny gaps in the heavy dark curtains, and pulling them back revealed vibrant pink, yellow, and orange hues through the city smog in the serene Satelite neighborhood, far from the bustling center.
The sleek, chic split-level Casa Roa blends seamlessly into an upscale suburban area of modern homes. Our spacious upstairs room featured a comfortable queen bed, a 50-inch flat-screen TV with Netflix, an en-suite bathroom, and ample closet space. Below, a simple green garden offered relaxing lawn furniture and fruit trees.
Breakfast in the shiny modern kitchen started with fresh fig jam from the garden trees, alongside homemade chilaquiles, strong coffee, and exotic fruits. The casual communal table felt like dining with friends, not hotel guests. The TV played cartoons in the morning, followed by a quirky 1970s Mexican film featuring a Lucha Libre wrestler—an authentically eccentric touch.
To recover from jet lag, we explored nearby Satelite, stocking up on wine, cheese, bread, and snacks for a cozy movie night. The rest of the day was for work and rest.
Casa Roa’s location, distant from Mexico City’s historic center and subway, suits business travelers, long-term students, repeat visitors, and digital nomads with its reliable high-speed Wi-Fi. First-timers may appreciate the “home” feel in a metropolis of 22 million, but plan for taxis or local buses.
Standout Feature: Exceptional Homemade Food
Host Gabi’s traditional breakfasts of chilaquiles and huevos rancheros were prepared fresh while we chatted over coffee. She even shared a plate of Rajas con Papas (grilled poblano peppers and potatoes), demonstrating the grilling and peeling technique. We left with a new authentic recipe. The open fridge, stove, dishes, couch, and TV in the kitchen foster a true sense of community. Casa Roa captured our hearts through its cuisine.
Room for Improvement: Guest Information Resources
Owner Isabel, the warm matriarch praised on TripAdvisor, was absent due to a family emergency. Her presence typically provides recommendations, cab calls, and personalized touches. Without her, we felt somewhat adrift. We recommend a comprehensive info folder with local maps, restaurant guides, bus directions to the center, Spanish directions for cabs with fares, and a welcome letter on house history, breakfast times, and gate hours.
Casa Roa: Our Verdict
Casa Roa offers a comfortable, beautifully decorated home-away-from-home, providing an authentic taste of upscale Mexican suburban life.
