Library Hotel Review: Top Boutique Gem in Midtown Manhattan, NYC
Our top pick for a New York City hotel? Hands down, the Library Hotel. Inspired by the New York Public Library just a block away, this boutique property masterfully weaves a literary theme throughout. Rooms and floors follow the Dewey Decimal System—think Social Sciences, Languages, Philosophy—with each room dedicated to a specific subject. We stayed in the corner Law Room suite on the Social Sciences floor, surrounded by legal tomes on shelves, tables, and nightstands. A few more nights, and we might've aced the bar exam.
A fierce Manhattan downpour kept us indoors, where I savored the view from our window: yellow cabs splashing along Madison Avenue like a living painting. Come morning, the scene shifted to throngs of suited commuters, coffee in hand, weaving past delivery folks, kids, and quintessential New York characters en route to towering skyscrapers.
Housed in a slender Midtown building on prime real estate, rooms range from cozy to compact—some singles only. Rates reflect the unbeatable style, location, and vibe over sheer size. Over 6,000 books from a nearby used bookstore (not the public library!) stock the 60 rooms across 10 floors, plus grand bookcases in the Reading Room, home to complimentary breakfast and evening wine receptions.
Like all Library Hotel Collection properties, it offers a generous free continental breakfast daily and a 3-hour evening wine-and-cheese spread with cheeses, crackers, breads, olives, veggies, nuts, reds, whites, sparklings, tea, and coffee. Snacks and beverages are available 24/7 in the Reading Room, alongside free Wi-Fi hotel-wide. Guests also get complimentary daily passes to the nearby New York Sports Club.
Standout Feature: Exceptional Public Spaces
Space is at a premium, but the Reading Room is a highlight—lined with books, newspapers, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Nearby, the hotel's business center rivals any corporate office: dual desktop computers at ergonomic desks, a high-quality printer, phones, supplies, and more. Up top, the Writer’s Den and Bookmarks Lounge provide serene indoor/outdoor lounging, while the Poetry Garden terrace invites quiet reflection amid the urban buzz.
Standout Feature: Unbeatable Location
The Library Hotel sits steps from the New York Public Library, Grand Central, Bryant Park, Garment District, Times Square, MoMA, and endless dining and nightlife. Madison & Vine, a Midtown favorite, occupies the ground floor. Shoppers love nearby Madison Avenue icons like Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, and Barneys New York.
Room for Improvement? None Here
As seasoned travelers, we’re tough critics—yet the Library Hotel left us speechless. High rates and petite rooms? That's the premium for Manhattan magic. Service is flawless, the theme immersive, and details thoughtful. It welcomes business pros, honeymooners (see this Tripadvisor honeymoon review), and everyone in between.
